John Dixon came to Oakdale in 1969. He quickly became friends with Susan Stewart. He wooed Sandy McGuire and even proposed to her, but she planned to marry someone else. Susan and John did date for awhile, but John felt Susan was only using him to make Dan jealous, which is what she was doing.

John became attracted to Kim Reynolds and they began dating. John proposed, but Kim wasn't interested in marriage to him at this point. After she had a one night stand with Bob Hughes and became pregnant, she decided to marry John to give her baby a name. John knew it wasn't his child. Kim and John eloped in Las Vegas. Kim ended up losing the baby later (or at least that what was thought to have happened back then).

John and Kim's marriage was a horrible union. John forced himself on Kim sexually (marital rape wasn't a crime at the time) and used guilt to keep Kim when he was accidently injured and confined to a wheelchair. Kim soon grew close to Dan Stewart, and Susan and John did all they could to keep the two of them apart. Finally Kim, who was now pregnant by John, broke the union up. In 1976, after their divorce Kim gave birth to their son, Andy.

John moved into an apartment building and became neighbors with Mary Ellison. They became friends. John began dating a nurse named Pat Holland. John didn't want Dan Stewart to raise his son and Kim and John had no formal custody arrangement. John got Pat Holland to distract Carol while she was watching Andrew. John took Andy. Pat helped John take care of him at a house he rented. Dan figured out that John had Andrew and Kim wanted Dan to rescue Andy. The law really couldn't help them because technically, John didn't kidnap Andy. Pat didn't resist when Dan showed up to get Andy, but John went into a rage and pulled a gun out of his car's glove compartment. Pat got John to put the gun down, but when he threw it down it went off and hit him in the chest. At the hospital John told everyone Dan shot him. Dan was arrested for kidnapping and attempted murder! John married Pat so they'd be on the same side at the trial, but Pat couldn't take it. She told the truth at Dan's trial and fled from the courtroom and fell down a flight of stairs. She didn't survive the fall. The charges against Dan were dropped and he wed Kim.

John saved Mary Ellison, Teddy Ellison, and Melinda Gray from a fire in Melinda's apartment building that Jay Stallings accidently set. Dan ended up operating on John and saved his life. Mary wanted to end her friendship with John, as she found out what he was really like. After he lied and told people that they were living together, Mary finally broke off all contact with John.

John used many different tricks and lies and got Dee Stewart to marry him. All of the Stewarts were against the union. The marriage ended after Dee accused John of raping her (she was groggy from sleeping pills and thought he was Brad Hollister, he thought she knew it was him). John learned he was the father of Lyla Montgomery's daughter, Margo, from testimony at Dee's trial.
